When should my child first see a dentist?

Kids · September 12 · Written by the Pine Street team

Sooner than most parents think. Here’s what a first visit looks like, and how to make it easy.

By their first birthday

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit when the first tooth appears, or by age one. It sounds early, but those first visits are short and mostly about getting comfortable.

What happens at the visit

We count teeth, check the gums and bite, and talk with you about brushing, bottles and snacks. Many little ones sit on a parent’s lap the whole time.

Making it easy

Book a morning slot when your child is rested, read a picture book about the dentist beforehand, and keep the words simple: “The dentist will count your teeth.”

Questions about your own situation? Call us or book a visit. We’re happy to talk it through.
