Lumen Hill Observatory

A one-of-a-kind site for a stargazing venue: 180,000 stars that fly between a galaxy, Saturn, a black hole, a planetarium dome and the venue’s own name as you scroll.

The brief

The problem to solve

An observatory sells a feeling: the first time you see Saturn’s rings yourself. Photos of a telescope on a hill don’t do that, and most venue sites look the same. The site had to make people feel the sky before they ever drive out.

Our approach
  • The sky is the site: every section turns the same stars into what that section is about, so scrolling feels like traveling.
  • It plays back: the galaxy bends around your cursor or finger, and a tap sets off a supernova. People stay and show friends.
  • Underneath, it’s still a plain, fast venue site: shows, telescope nights, field trips, hours and tickets, in real text a phone and Google can read.
What we built

The website

  • Hand-written WebGL particle engine, no libraries: up to 180,000 stars on the graphics card
  • Five scroll scenes: galaxy, ringed planet, black hole, planetarium dome, the venue’s name
  • Cursor and touch gravity, tap-to-supernova shockwave
  • Adapts to the device: fewer stars on phones and slow computers, still at full speed
  • Respects “reduce motion” settings and falls back cleanly without WebGL
  • Shows, telescope nights, field trips and visit info as real, readable text
